Madam Kwa Geok Choo -- wife of Singapore's former Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew -- has passed away. I am quite at a loss for words here. My mom told me things about her, how much she did behind the scenes. She was an amazing lady, from all accounts. She'd graduated with First Class Honours from Cambridge on a scholarship, yet settled to play the role of the Prime Minister's wife, saying, "I walk two steps behind my husband like a good Asian wife". She was intelligent and educated, but furthering her studies in England did not lead her astray from her Asian roots. That's something you've got to admire.
(From The Sydney Morning Herald.)
To look on the bright side, Madam Kwa had been bedridden and unable to speak for quite some time following a series of strokes. So maybe, you know, maybe it was for the best. Probably. I hope she's in a better place now.
The trending topic on Twitter was 'RIP Mrs Lee Kuan Yew'. It brought to mind this line from Fight Club:
Only in death will we have out own name since only in death are we no longer part of the effort. In death we become heroes.
In my opinion, people should have the decency to type her name. She wasn't just Mrs. Lee Kuan Yew; she wasn't just the former Prime Minister of Singapore's wife. Her name was Kwa Geok Choo, and people should know that.
Rest in peace, Madam Kwa Geok Choo. May you be looking down upon Singapore from Heaven.
